She credits her love for music to her grandma, who first introduced jazz to her as a little girl. Khan began to love blues and rhythm as an early teen. She formed her first girl band, the Crystalettes aged 11 and Taka. Khan became a part of The Black Panther Party in 1967 after becoming close to the Chicago born activist Fred Hampton, a member of the Black Panther Party. Although many believe that they were given the name Chaka while in the Panthers she has clarified that her name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi came from a name given at the age of 13 by Yoruba Baba. In 1969, she left the Panthers and had previously been a student at Calumet High School. Her first gig was around Chicago in small bands with her partner Hassan Khan. Chaka married Hassan in the year 1970.
